Wordpress spam bot hacked!?!?!

blogging — Posted by: mattadams on February 28, 2008 at 9:17 am

I need to apologize to anyone reading my blog over the last few days. Somehow, very profane and disturbing links were added to some posts. They only showed up in RSS feeds. These links have been removed. Thanks to my wonderful wife who reading my blog in her google reader, and noticed the links.

I really dont know how they got in. Any one know? Is it a wordpress hole? did some one figure out my password? or could it be a server thing and they some how hacked into the database?

Any ideas? I want to fix this asap to avoid any un-intentional linking to adult sites, viagra sales, or cheap software

iphone web tricks

Research — Posted by: mattadams on February 28, 2008 at 6:22 am

Do you have a site that is popular with the iPhone users? Want to be really cool and have a custom iPhone WebClip icon? maybe have a “Dial Me” link?

WebClip

A webclip icon is the small graphic icon that iPhone uses as the image to launch your site.

All you have to do is create your icon at 57 x 57px and save as a png, name it “apple-touch-icon.png”. Now place it in the root directory of your site. You don’t even need to worry about adding the glossy highlight or round corners, the iPhone does all that for you. Safari on the iPhone will now recognize your icon when a user adds your site to their homescreen.

iPhone Dial Link

Call me on your iphone links

Just like a Click to email, now we can provide links to dial phone numbers with the tel: URL scheme:

[a href=“tel:1-408-555-5555“ ]1-408-555-5555 [/a]
(sorry for the [ ] in place of <>, i didnt want the blog to actually make that a link)

Pretty sweet huh.

Inbox Zero

If you are like me, you probably live in your email. Its a monster at times. But great management of your inbox can be an amazing thing.

Recently someone shared a great video from Merlin Mann speaking at Google with me. Its a long one, but great. If you are familiar with the books by David Allen Getting things Done, or Ready for Anything, you’ll understand where this is coming from.

Risky Marketing

Beyond Madison Avenue (a great blog focused on adverstising) Shares this amazing ad by Axe body spray.

While I do like the fact that this ad is not the traditional skimpy dressed models, I’d think that hillary would not be happy about this.

I think it’s pretty risky of axe to do. But does it work? When is risky advertising too much? What do you define as “too far”?

So Does this ad go to far? or is it just huge PR for axe? Regardless, I guess a little controversy stirs up the blog world pot.

HEY! Are you coming to the ChurchPlanters.com conference? We are! If you are attending the conference, please stop by our booth and say hi. Since we have probably never met in real life, we would love to give you a hug. Or just say hi and shake your hand. It’s your call.

Also, if you know any friends, acquaintances (or even perfect strangers) that need a great site, please send them to our booth too. Remember what your mother always told you, friends don’t let friends have lame websites.

See you at the show!

Using RSS feeds as a Learning tool

Marketing, Research, blogging — Posted by: mattadams on February 15, 2008 at 5:36 am

Am I living under a rock? or is it true that no one is really using RSS feeds in an educational model?

Here are my thoughts on some possible uses:

  • Schools could broadcast homework (Students and parents would subscribe)
  • Word of the day?
  • Daily bible or other scripture reading
  • Weekly leadership coaching or mentoring
  • Foreign language learning
  • Program tool skills

I could keep going. Maybe I just dont know about some of these systems out there. The way I see it, having a free education tool to subscribe to, could be a great way to generate income (via ads on each post).

Anyone have other ideas for RSS educational broadcast feeds? Or solutions that already exist to my ideas?

the importance of edcuation

Marketing, blogging, humor — Posted by: mattadams on February 7, 2008 at 8:36 pm

Yes, my title is mis-spelled intentionally. More details in a second.

So I try to use the powers of this blog for the good of mankind. I also keep it a goal to post positive, insightful, inspiring topics. So I’ll do my best to keep this one positive.

Our small town has a pretty good magazine that comes out once every two months. I say pretty good, because its the ONLY magazine for our city. Usually insightful, and offering solid topics. There are times that typos happen, but this one was the best.

edcuation

Yes, you read that right. A large headline, about education, spelled wrong. Now I am not one to judge, after all, some of you may know the story of a devastating misspelling on a resume I had a few years ago. I also understand as a designer, that after you have stared at something for 5 hours, everything looks either perfect, or wrong.

What I would like to stress here, is the importance of spell check. I know it wont catch everything, and sometimes corrects the word wrongly, but at least run it. I often have to run it several times, and run something by a few others and my beautiful wife for the final okay.

Anyone have any funny typo stories out there to share? I’m sure those of us reading this blog would love to share in the humor of others misfortunate typos.
